Early in life James Dean knew he had artistic ability. Believing that it was impossible to make a living as an artist, he struggled to take a more “practical” route. But although studying engineering, he could not resist the artistic urge and he continued to paint after earning his degree. His early paintings were ink on paper renderings of local scenes, buildings & houses in the Athens area. He was proud, but surprised when people actually began to buy them. Then along came a little cat named Pete & transformed his life and career. Not long after James began painting the engaging behavior of Pete the Cat, he was able to bid a fond goodbye to the “practical” route and live his life as a successful full-time artist. In 2010 HarperCollins published a childrens book about Pete, illustrated by James. It was an instant hit, putting Pete on the NY Times Children's Books Bestseller List. James collaborated with his wife Kimberly as the author of many of the Pete stories. Now numbering more than twenty, the Pete the Cat books have become an unstoppable force, even branching into an animated TV series. We are certain there are more great things to come from James Dean and Pete the Cat!
