Sarah Rakes lives a quiet rural life in the hills of north Georgia where she tends her garden and creates her brilliant paintings. Her chosen subjects come directly from her surroundings - flowers, cats, trees, farmland - reflecting her deep sense of connection to the living world. She imbues her subjects with bright vibrant colors and geometric patterns that carry over onto her handmade frames. From her childhood days in Arkansas, Sarah knew that she would be an artist, and at age 20 she set out on her own. Quite by accident, her journey landed her in Georgia where she has lived ever since. Her art ambitions were put on hold for a time while she and her husband built their house by hand, raised 3 children, and grew most of the food for the family table. In 1986 she returned her attentions to painting. Her husband, Mike Esslinger, a skilled carpenter and sculptor, constructs most of Sarah's frames, and they occasionally collaborate on rustic furniture pieces. Except for one show each year, Sarah prefers to leave the selling of her art to someone else, opting instead to stay at home in the peace of her environment. You can usually catch both Sarah and Mike in person at the annual Kentuck Festival of the Arts in Northport, Alabama and at the annual Fearrington Folk Art Show near Pittsboro, NC.
